Residents evacuated from homes as emergency services attend

A large sinkhole has opened up in Swanscombe, Kent, causing a road to be closed and residents to be evacuated from their homes.

The sinkhole, which is around 50 feet wide and 30 feet deep, appeared on Galley Hill Road on Monday morning (28 November).

Emergency services were called to the scene and the road was closed in both directions. Residents in the affected area have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

It is not yet known what caused the sinkhole to appear, but it is thought to be linked to the recent heavy rainfall.

Kent Police have advised motorists to avoid the area and to find alternative routes.

The sinkhole is the latest in a series of similar incidents that have occurred in the UK in recent years.

In 2018, a sinkhole appeared in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, causing a gas main to rupture and homes to be evacuated.

And in 2017, a sinkhole opened up in St Albans, Hertfordshire, swallowing a car and causing a water main to burst.

Sinkholes are caused by the collapse of underground cavities, which can be formed by the erosion of soluble rocks such as chalk or limestone.

They can also be caused by human activity, such as mining or construction.

Sinkholes can be a hazard to people and property, and it is important to be aware of the risks if you live in an area that is prone to them.

If you see a sinkhole, it is important to stay away from it and to call the emergency services immediately.
